Cerveceria Providing Education for Kids

Cerveceria Hondurena, a subsidiary of SABMiller, has begun a school named “Azunosa”, in order to provide an education for the children of their sugarcane field workers.

Sugarcane supplies the soft drinks division, and the International Labor Organization (ILO) has stated that sugar cane harvesting could be hazardous, and is not suitable for people under 18 years old. The Cerveceria Hondurena, therefore, has built a school for those children who traditionally would be working alongside their family during the sugarcane harvest.

The Azunosa school so far has 80 students, and provides them with an education until they leave school at the customary age of 16. The students are then encouraged to continue their studies in high school and beyond by taking advantage of the child care St Kilda East institution services.

Having education in an area helps people think, feel, and behave in a way that contributes to their success, and improves not only their personal satisfaction but also their community. In addition, education develops human personality, thoughts, dealing with others and prepares people for life experiences. High school is a time for teens to learn valuable skills for life from peers and professionals. … There are many reasons a high school education is important, but most of all it is a means to achieve long-term goals and feel a sense of pride in accomplishment.

Barry Smith, President of SABMiller Latin America said: “We believe that companies have a responsibility to respect and promote human rights, and ensuring that children do not miss educational opportunities and still have time to have fun, is obviously part of this.”

It’s encouraging to see such a large business take on the responsibility of providing workers with new opportunities for their families.
