Christmas Holiday Brings Unfortunate Crime Statistics

The spokesman for the Ministry of Security of Honduras, Héctor Iván Mejía, reported that Christmas celebrations left 99 people dead.

According to figures supplied by the authorities, there were 82 people killed and 17 deaths by traffic accidents.

According to Mejía, the number of murders fell by 30 with respect to those recorded for the same period in 2010, when they totaled 112. The Minister said that in 2011, there were two less deaths from traffic accidents. Last year there were 19 nationwide.

Deaths over the Christmas holiday in Honduras consisted of of 61 people through the use of firearms, 21 from knives (machete and knife) and three by blunt objects (stones and sticks).

17 people were killed during these three days as a result of road tragedies. 97 collisions with property damage and 331 thousand driver’s licenses were seized.

Unofficial data suggests that areas with the highest death rates were the central zone, northern zone, and the Department of Olancho.
