CONCACAF U-20 Preview: Friday Semifinals

The CONCACAF U-20 semifinals take place on Friday with the U.S. taking on host nation Trinidad and Tobago and Costa Rica playing Honduras (5:00 pm).

Marvin Lee Stadium in Macoya, Trinidad and Tobago will host two CONCACAF Under 20 Championship semifinals on Friday night with Costa Rica playing Honduras in the early match an the U.S. taking on Trinidad and Tobago in the nightcap.

The United States made their way into the second round as Group 1 winners on the strength of wins against El Salvador and Jamaica and a draw with Honduras. Five goals from three matches may not seem like a lot at first glance, but the U-20’s backed up their goals by not allowing a single goal against them in the group stage.

Five different scorers found the net for the Americans, including Peri Merosevic, who was involved on two goals in the first match and assisted on Tony Taylor’s goal in the final group match. However, though qualifying to Egypt is assured, the loss of Brek Shea and Jorge Flores to suspension could prove detrimental to the team’s chances of making the final of this tournament.

The U.S. will have the added problem of taking on the host nation in the semifinal. T&T proved to be a tough opponent in the group stage, allowing only two goals in three matches, both in a 2-2 draw with Mexico. Much like the Americans, the Trinis have gotten all three goals from different scorers, but rely mainly on a stingy defense to keep games under control.

Costa Rica comes into their semifinal tie as Group 2 winners after claiming a win over Canada on Wednesday. In three matches the Costa Ricans have only allowed one goal into their net, but the Ticos have only scored three times.

Honduras heads into the tie with Costa Rica as the runner-up from Group 1. Draws with El Salvador and the United States plus a resounding 4-0 victory over Jamaica was enough to push Honduras through to the semifinals. C.D. Olimpia product Roger Rojas paces the team with two goals, the second-highest total of the competition.
