Ponce is suspected by Guatemalan authorities of operating in various cities and transporting drugs through the department of Peten.

Investigations indicate that his helicopter had taken off from Guatemala, and that it had been carrying cocaine. Ponce was allegedly accompanied by fellow Guatemalan Alberto Morales Coronado and by Honduran Jose Lito Flores, who were also detained.
