Ecuador Protests Honduras’ Invitation to Summit

Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa, whose country is the current President of UNASUR, said the group’s presidents were not happy that Spain invited President Pepe Lobo and the Honduran government to join in the European Union-Latin America/Caribbean summit being held on May 18 in Madrid.

Of the UNASUR members, (Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay and Venezuela) only the governments of Colombia and Peru have recognized the new Honduran government, and President Correa warned that many countries would not be at the summit if Honduras participated.

He pointed out that Honduras had been suspended by the Organization of American States (OAS), and said that formally recognizing the Honduran government “would set a disastrous precedent” for the region.

“We all want to go (to the summit in Madrid), but we do not want to abandon our principles, and we don’t want the breakdown of the constitutional order (in Honduras) to be minimized,” according to President Correa. “We feel belittled; many are acting like nothing even happened here.”
