Former Security Minister Passes Away

The former Security Minister and a retired General, Álvaro Romero, died yesterday in a Military Hospital in the Honduran capital of Tegucigalpa. The General had suffered an illness for several days according to his family.

General Álvaro Romero was one of the most renowned members of the Armed Forces of Honduras and held many senior positions during his military career. General Romero served as the powerful Commander of the 105th Brigade in the northern city of San Pedro Sula, and served as Security Minister in the government of former President Manuel Zelaya (2006 – 2009).

The General left that administration when he spoke out against former Foreign Minister, Milton Jimenez, and former General Manager of the Honduras Telecommunications Company (Hondutel), Marcelo Chimirri, for policy violations. Jimenez went on to be arrested several times for drunkenness, and Marcelo Chimirri (nephew to Manuel Zelaya) is serving prison time for bribery, fraud and abuse of authority.

During the administration of Carlos Roberto Reina (1994-1998), General Romero was head of the Presidential Honor Guard, and served as ambassador of Honduras to Nicaragua during the government of Jose Azcona (1986-1990).

Originally from the department of Olancho, General Álvaro Romero kept a low profile and was very much a family man.
