Honduran Coffee Production on the Rise

Honduras will produce 6.4 percent more coffee in the upcoming 2010/11 season as farmers, spurred on by high prices, buy more fertilizers and expand their coffee growing land, the head of the national coffee association said.

According to Marcial Flores, Honduras sees production for the 2010/11 season at 3.83 million 60-bags of coffee compared with the 3.6 million bags produced in the 2009/10 season.

Speaking from a regional coffee conference in San Pedro Sula, “The producers are interested in investing in their fields because of the high prices,” Flores said. “There are people who are increasing planting areas and recovering land that has been abandoned,” he added.

Honduras is Central America’s No. 2 coffee producer, and will export between 3.37 million and 3.45 million bags of coffee next season, which begins in October. In the ending 2009/10 coffee year, Honduras exported between 3.14 million and 3.22 million 60-kg bags of coffee.
