Honduran Gang Informant on Trial

A troubled government informant is on trial in San Francisco federal court this week, raising new questions — and confusion — about a sticky gang prosecution.

The informant, Roberto Acosta, is a Honduran immigrant who was arrested in San Francisco for jaywalking in 2005. He became a government informant and helped the feds infiltrate the violent MS-13 gang in San Francisco, according to federal immigration authorities. His information contributed to the arrest of more than 30 gang members, according to a federal immigration agent’s court testimony. Seven of those accused gangsters are currently in trial in San Francisco federal court.
