Honduran’s Record Broken After 66 Years

The second World War ended in the middle of August 1945. With the Allies accepting Japan’s surrender three months after the fall of Germany in May, Steve Van Buren prepared for his second season with the Eagles.

And, it was 66 years ago when this orphaned kid from Honduras went on to set a pair of Eagles’ records for most rushing touchdowns in a season, with 15, and most total touchdowns, with 18, in 1945.

Those records held up longer than the Berlin Wall. The marks outlasted the Cold War.

But Sunday, both records fell like fascism did in Europe more than a half century ago.

A 23-year-old kid from Harrisburg, Pa., replaced the records set by the 25-year-old from Honduras when LeSean McCoy rushed for three touchdowns in the Eagles’ 45-19 victory over the unsuspecting Jets.

Certainly, so much has changed in 66 years. The long talks around kitchen tables across America aren’t about the rise of fascism as they were then. Now, families are too busy to even talk at dinner, but they do catch up later on Facebook.

Yeah, talk of fascism has been replaced by talk on Facebook.

And, Van Buren has been replaced by McCoy.

Sure, it took a long while for times to change, which is a colossal credit to both Eagles running backs.

No doubt McCoy is a product of our tweeting times. He has his own Twitter account — CutonDime25 — while back during WWII, the American troops were using Morse code.

But, all in life hasn’t changed thanks to McCoy.

Respect is the same as it always was.

McCoy respects Van Buren as much as the opposing defenses back in the day did when No. 15 became the first NFL player to lead the league in rushing three straight years.

After his record-setting day finished with 17 rushing TDs and 20 overall scores, eclipsing the NFL Hall of Famer, McCoy said he was going to “look at some film this week” of Van Buren.

Perhaps, 66 years from now an Eagles’ running back from say, Haddonfield, will break the club record set by the kid from Harrisburg, who broke the mark of a kid from Honduras. And, if the kid does, he surely won’t have to ask for old black and white film on McCoy. There probably will be video in the helmets by then.

But, you hope that kid has the same respect for McCoy as McCoy does for Van Buren.

Really, McCoy is all first-class. He is as likeable as he is good.

In this turbulent year when the world seems to be crumbling in Lurie Land, owner Jeff Lurie needs to step up and re-sign McCoy, who will be entering the final year of his contract.

The kid is too good a player — and guy — for the Eagles to play money games with him.

After all, his 20 touchdowns not only lead the NFL, they’re tied for the 20th-best single-season total in NFL history. And there are two games left.

And he has scored a TD in 13 of 14 games.

Oh, but he did finally fumble. Yeah, McCoy snapped a streak of 490 regular-season touches without a fumble when he dropped the ball late in the second quarter.

So, yeah, the kid is human. He just seems too good to be true.
