Honduran Red Beans Price Declines

A pound of Honduran red beans cost upwards of 25 lempiras in 2011 and 2012, but thanks to an abundant supply, it now costs from five to seven lempiras on the open market.

“It depends on their quality, there are five, six, and six fifty. There is a good production, but there is no money for people to buy,” according to a beans seller in the Medina market.

Mid-2012, after the price of beans had rapidly risen and alarmed Hondurans nationwide, the price started to decline, driven by a generous production on the North Shore and western part of Honduras. There are now long lines of bean sacks being transported from Yoro, Copan, and Santa Barbara, and even Nicaragua.

For 2013, authorities of the Ministry of Agriculture have projected a harvest of two million five-hundred thousand quintals, which is up to half a million more than last year.
