Hondurans Win International Soccer Tournament

The Hondurans showed their love of soccer and tournament winning athletic abilities when 32 teams from 32 international communities came together September 18-20th for the first annual Mayor’s International Futsal Cup held in Indianapolis, IN.  Futsal is a version of soccer played on a hard surface with a smaller, heavier ball and teams of five-a-side. This format of play emphasizes ball control and skillful technique as players have a smaller space to utilize.

The teams participating in the Futsal Cup were required to be from the country they are representing, or have a parent or grandparent from that country.  The competitive three-day futsal tournament took place with a “world cup” format.  Teams were be divided into groups with rosters of 10-14 players, and competed in three games, using a round-robin format. The top two teams from each group moved on to a single-elimination tournament.

The event included music, food vendors, a beer garden, a Kids Zone, as well as an interactive street soccer demonstration.

This new annual cup hopes to encourage Indiana residents of diverse backgrounds to come together through a globally revered game and show pride for their countries of origin.
