Honduras Against Legalizing Drugs

Honduran sectors on Monday expressed through the press their opposition to the proposed legalization of drugs made by Guatemalan President Otto Perez Molina.

The digital newspaper laprensa.hn recalled that, according to a report of the Ministry of Security, 66 percent of crimes and offenses committed in Honduras are the result of drug use and trafficking.

The text also presents data of the Honduran Institute for the Prevention of Alcoholism and Drug Addiction, which reveals an increase of 30 percent of local consumption of drugs among young people.

Rony Portillo, executive director of that institute, warned that in countries where drugs have been decriminalized, rehabilitated people in addiction relapse and children begin consumption from 12 years old.

Experts and analysts agree that the proposal to legalize drugs will increase the number of crimes and crime rates and will not be a solution to the situation in this country.
