Honduras Invited to EU Conference

President Porfirio Lobo was invited to participate in the European Union-Latin America Agreement conference to be held in May in Madrid, according to the Spanish Secretary of State for Latin America, Juan Pablo de Laiglesia.

This is the first time a senior official from Spain has visited Tegucigalpa since the removal of ex-president Manuel Zelaya. President Lobo’s efforts have given reason for Mr. Laiglesia to state that, “Honduras’ relations with the international community and particularly with the EU and Spain will normalize.”

“Honduras has a new political scenario which allows us to contemplate the future with optimism,” he said.

Juan Pablo de Laiglesia arrived in Tegucigalpa to promote the partnership agreement of the European Union (EU) and Central America. Spain is currently the country holding the rotating EU presidency. Laiglesia met with both Mario Lobo and Chancellor Canahuati after arriving in the capital of Honduras from El Salvador and Guatemala. His tour will continue on to Nicaragua and Panama.

Spain, like other European countries, had recalled its ambassador from Honduras following the political crisis,
but sent the official back to Tegucigalpa
last week.
