This year alone, thanks to the special police unit, 350 extortionists operating in Honduras have been arrested, and of these 350 offenders, 100% percent are in jail. 190 cases have resulted in sentences of between 15 and 20 years in prison.

The monetary figures are encouraging as well. In the past 10 months, the police prevented the delivery of more than 20.2 million lempiras to the would-be extortionists.

According to the elite unit dedicated to fighting these criminals, those most targeted by extortionists are those working in the trades of transportation, shop owners, bars, gas stations, and beauty salons.
