Honduras President Witnesses Conservation Agreement

The Council of Ministers of Honduras, yesterday met at the Metropolitan Zoological Garden in El Picacho. President Porfirio Lobo Sosa afterward signed an important agreement relating to the zoo (also known as the Rosy Walter Metropolitan Zoo Agreement Signing) as witness of honor.

The agreement between the Foundation Antonio Nasser (FUNDANASE) and the Secretary of State for the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (SERNA), was crafted to boost the zoo’s tourism and investment opportunities.

The strategic partnership plans to promote the development of the facility, which is home to over 55 species of animals, and the development of the Center for Conservation and Recuperation of Species, which aims to encourage respect for the wildlife and environment of Honduras. The flora and fauna of Honduras is represented, promoting their care and preservation as well. The Center will create new employment opportunities, boost tourism, and encourage investment opportunities in a continuous learning school, while promoting biodiversity conservation in the country.

Rigoberto Cuellar, of SERNEA, expressed a commitment to the responsibility of overseeing the zoo’s operation and maintenance. President Lobo Sosa and various ministers and officials had the opportunity to review the master plan, the binding instrument establishing the main guidelines for the successful development of the project. The agreement was signed by FUNDANASE representative, Miguel Antonio Nasser; alumni from public and private schools in Tegucigalpa who will help with the conservation and care of the zoo species; and members of the Cabinet.
