Honduras Students Study Dengue

Students majoring in health at the National Autonomous University of Honduras (UNAH) have begun training for the care of patients infected with dengue.

According to the rector of the UNAH, Julieta Castellanos, students will participate in an awareness campaign for the public to eliminate breeding grounds for mosquitoes, and to learn about how to care for infected persons in the coming days.

University authorities also announced the opening of laboratories of the alma mater for people with symptoms of dengue. Analysis can be performed, and examinations given by doctors.

Medical students in their fifth and sixth year will provide health care under the supervision of teachers, and work with the medical staff of health centers to educate the population in the detection and elimination of mosquito breeding sites.

In Honduras, so far this year, there are reported 14,609 cases of classic dengue, 515 of hemorrhagic, and 19 deaths.
