Honduras Will Not Attend LA Summit

Honduras was not invited to the Summit of Unity of Latin America and the Caribbean to be held in Mexico, afterall.

Mexican Secretary of Foreign Relations, Patricia Espinosa, affirmed that the Honduran government has not been invited to participate, because of its current standings with the OAS.

The event is scheduled to take place February 21st to 23rd at the Riviera Maya, and will integrate the Rio Group Summit and the Latin American and Caribbean Integration and Development (CALC) organization. The focus will be the regional integration issue, but it is possible that the situation in Honduras and the earthquake in Haiti will occupy part of the discussion.

Nicaragua’s President, Daniel Ortega, said last week that there was a possibility that Central American countries will meet on the sidelines of the meeting in Mexico to analyze the situation in Honduras. Ortega stated Honduras has problems due to several resolutions being passed by the Central American Integration System, the Rio Group, the Bolivian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America, and the OAS during the Honduran political crisis.

During a special meeting held in 2009 in Managua, the Rio Group vigorously condemned the Honduras change of power and expressed support for what they considered the then constitutional President, Manuel Zelaya.
