Illegal Fishermen Fined $10,000 Each

FORTY three Honduran fishermen who were arrested illegally fishing in Jamaican waters, were fined and ordered deported when they appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court today.

The Hondurans were rescued by the Jamaica Defense Force Coast Guard between Sunday and Tuesday morning.

A Coast Guard vessel was conducting fisheries protection patrols on the Pedro Banks when it approached two suspicious vessels. On the approach of the Coast Guard, the vessels fled, leaving their countrymen stranded in the water.

The Hondurans were each fined $10,000 or six months for illegal entry and $500 or 10 days for illegal fishing.

They were then ordered deported by Senior Magistrate Judith Pusey.
