Marathón Advances in CONCACAF

Honduras’ Marathón lost 2-1 to Tauro of Panama Wednesday, but will still advance to the group stage of the CONCACAF Champions League.

Claudio Labarinas scored in the 24th minute for Marathón.  It was Labarinas’ third goal in two games, having scored the first and last in Marathón’s victory in Panama. Luis Renteria of Tauro scored two late goals in the second half to win the game, but his team still loses out on further CONCACAF competition.

The loss was only Marathón’s second in 10 games at home in the Champions League; their 3-0 win in the first leg of the qualifier last week advanced them, winning their Preliminary Round series 4-2. Marathón joins Group C along with Monterrey, Saprissa and the Seattle Sounders.

Marathón will open the Group Stage at home on August 19th against Seattle, completing the first round of matches. Marathón begins its Honduran Apertura season on August 11th.
