Minimum Wage Alternative Not Accepted

The leaders of the working class on Thursday stressed they will not accept any compensatory bonus, as announced by President Porfirio Lobo Sosa.

“We have decided not to accept the 2010 bonus or anything like that.” … “The law clearly states that there should be a percentage adjustment to the minimum wage for workers in Honduras,” said the President of the General Confederation of Workers (CGT), Daniel Duron.

The labor leader felt that accepting a bonus would violate the Minimum Wage Act, which provides for an increase, not an alternative measure.

“We are going to make certain the law is respected; we will rely exclusively on the provision of the Minimum Wage Law in the country,” he said.

Employers and workers have failed to reach an agreement on the minimum wage after several months of negotiations.
