More Rain Expected in Honduras

Heavy rains with hail, accompanied by lightening, have left fallen trees, flooded streets, and areas without electricity; causing alarm and concern this Holy week in Honduras.

More than 300 thousand Tegucigalpa inhabitants live in high-risk areas, and many others live in areas with some vulnerability.

Rains that fell in the capital city for a few hours were sufficient to flood the capital’s market area and neighborhoods close to the Multiplaza Mall. Trees collapsed in four areas of Cerro Grande.

Thunderstorms accompanied by hailstones also caused a fire at the Secretariat of Public Works, Transport and Housing (Soptravi), where a few vehicles were reached by the flames. Members of the fire department managed to control the situation.

The weather caused vehicular chaos when the electricity went out in many areas of the capital. Authorities of the National Enterprise of Electric Energy (ENEE) said that electric jolts brought about the fall of a circuit which provides service to most of the Tegucigalpa neighborhoods.

In the midst of the heavy rains pounding over the capital, Mayor Ricardo Álvarez, called on the citizens of Tegucigalpa to not be alarmed, but to alert the municipal authorities and the municipal relief personnel of any emergencies.

“Everything indicates that we will continue to receive these rains tomorrow.” “Maintain being alert and prepared, without scaring us”, reiterated Álvarez.

The head of the Fire Department, Jaime Omar Silva, informed reporters that “we controlled 40 meters of cellar where oils and fuels were stored,” and said they were relieved once the situation was controlled.

Honduras WeatherMeteorological expert, Francisco Argeñal, said that Honduras will be experiencing rainfall, hail, and lightening for the next few days due to a phenomena coming from the Pacific coast of the country.
