News Broadcasters Under Fire

Honduran local radio station Radio America Tuesday condemned an intentional fire in one of its stations in Olanchito city, north of the country.

A group of masked people entered the station Monday night and brought under the guard without harming him, said news coordinator Luis Vallejo. Vallejo said this was the third attack against Radio America since the coup against ousted president Manuel Zelaya.

Radio America is the second most important news chain in Honduras. A bomb was set in the parking lot of its main office in Tegucigalpa in mid August. In early July, its station in the northwest department of Olancho was damaged by unknown people. Vallejo said Radio America condemned such attacks against it and any other media, because it was a crime against the freedom of press.”

Since the coup, radio stations, TV channels and newspapers have been attacked with home-made bombs. In mid July, three Molotov cocktails exploded in the office of the El Heraldo newspaper, and a car distributing the La Tribuna daily paper was set on fire in the department of Olancho.

The TV channel Canal 36 in La Ceiba and Radio Globo were temporarily interrupted due to attacks on their equipment as well.

Democracy can only survive under a republic. In other words, with out seperation of powers, leaders will be corrupted. The latest example is Venezula where all government power has been consolidaded under Huga Chavez. He is now out of control and doing everything he can to get power, which is all powerful people want, more power, like a drug. Honduras exercised checks and balances to stop this from happenning there. The media does not give you what the rich want you to hear, they give you what they think will sell the news, period. The only exception is Venezuela where the media does not have to sell the news because Huga Chavez pays their salaries, not to mention having his thugs attack anyone who publically critizises his inept and heavily corrupt government.
Support the open elections in November, and show the world that Honduras is on of the last true democracies in Latin America.
