President Lobo Decrees National Emergency

President Lobo has decreed a national emergency today, as torrential rains from tropical storm Agatha brought deadly flooding and mudslides to several regions of Honduras.

Heavy rains poured across the departments of Copan, Santa Barbara, Comayagua, Cortes, and parts of Yoro. The Valley of Sula (San Pedro, El Progresso, La Lima, etc.), El Paraiso, Francisco Morazan, Choluteca, Valle and La Paz, as well as Lenca, Intibuca, Lempira, parts of La Paz, Ocotepeque and parts of Comayagua are all experiencing effects from the extreme weather.

About 2,000 people had to be evacuated and placed in shelters; Honduras emergency officials say flooding and landslides have destroyed 45 homes. One man was crushed to death when a wall collapsed.

U.S. military helicopters from the Palmerola air base are joining search-and-rescue missions.

48 more hours of rain is expected.

Schools will be closed tomorrow in the following locations: Choluteca, Valle, Santa Barbara, Lempira, Copan, Ocotepeque, Comayagua, El Progreso, Cortes, San Pedro Sula, Choloma and La Lima.
