Honduras and Colombia today reaffirmed their ties of cooperation on security and justice.
Presidents Collaborate on Crime
President Porfirio Lobo began his visit to Colombia today with plans to meet with Colombian president Juan Manuel Santos to discuss the continuing coordination of the military and police between both countries.

“Today we came specifically … to see how the relationship is structured and coordinated between all operators that deal with the issue of crime control,” President Lobo said upon his arrival at the Bogotá military terminal.

President Lobo was shortly thereafter greeted by President Santos in the government house. He was accompanied by officials of the Ministry of Defense, including Marlon Pascua, as well as delegates from the police and military forces.

The Police of Colombia have shared intelligence, strategy and operational procedures with members of the Honduran National Police in order to reduce the wave of crime, drug trafficking, and kidnappings in the country. The President of Columbia confirmed that their collaboration has freed 40 Honduran hostages and resulted in the capture of 100 criminals.

The Colombian president also stated that it was necessary to make some legal reforms in Honduras, “In the legal reforms they have asked us for help, and we have told them we will be happy to provide it.”

In addition to the President of Honduras, the meeting on safety legislation was attended by the National Congress president, Juan Orlando Hernández, the Minister of National Defense, Marlon Pascua, the Minister of Security, Oscar Álvarez, the Joint Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces, Rene Canales Osorio, and Deputy Director of the National Police, Rene Maradiaga Pancham.

Honduras President Lobo thanked President Juan Manuel Santos for his ongoing cooperation with Honduras, and praised the tradition of the people and government of Colombia of supporting the fight against crime, organized crime, and drug trafficking.

“We thank you, the President of Colombia, and your people, for caring about the Honduran people, which is reciprocal from us” … “We will continue to work to bring our countries the right to live in peace and quiet,” he said.
