President Lobo is in El Salvador

Salvadoran President Mauricio Funes, is meeting today in Guatemala with their President, Alvaro Colom, and the President of Honduras, Porfirio Lobo, to address
Honduras’ return to international recognition.

President Funes told reporters that they plan to discuss ways to help Honduras “advance in its internal process to obtain a consensus, the construction of harmony, and the coexistence of peace and democracy”.

The talks are scheduled to take place before the meeting being held of Central American Presidents with U.S. Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton.

Funes considers it important to review the best ways to encourage Honduras “back into the fold” of the Central American Integration System (SICA) and the Organization of American States (OAS). Honduras was suspended from the OAS after the removal of Manuel Zelaya from his post as President in June last year, and SICA members withdrew their ambassadors.

The political situation in Honduras also stopped the negotiations of the Association Agreement between Central America and the European Union (EU), which resumed in late February without Honduras present.

Funes stated he would be using the meeting with Clinton to “fine tune some details on the agenda” for when he travels to the White House on March 8th to meet with his U.S. counterpart, Barack Obama. They are expected to discuss the issue of Honduras at that meeting as well.
