President Lobo OK After Emergency Landing

Porfirio Lobo Sosa was traveling yesterday, by helicopter, from the department of Valle to the capital city of Tegucigalpa, when the aircraft was forced to land early. The Bell 412 aircraft of the Honduran Air Force (HAF) made an emergency landing in San Lorenzo, just about 4:00 pm, officials said.

President Lobo was traveling with his private secretary, Reinaldo Sanchez, the Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, Jacobo Regalado, and the owner of Banadesa, Jonny Handal.

According to a statement issued by the Government, the presidential helicopter experienced a failure in one of its turbines.

“President Lobo was traveling in the presidential helicopter with his entourage, when it experienced a failure in one of its turbines. The pilot of the aircraft made a precautionary landing in a sector of the city of San Lorenzo,” according to the Presidential House.

Upon arrival in the capital, President Lobo Sosa said the pilots executed a routine procedure, as a safety measure for a president.

“Pepe” said the landing came almost 20 minutes after the failure was detected, and noted that at no time did he fear that the aircraft would crash. “We’re fine,” he said.

Like “Pepe”, former presidents Rafael Callejas, Carlos Flores and Ricardo Maduro, all suffered similar mishaps during their presidencies.
