Relatives Awaiting Remains from Honduras Prison Fire

honduras prison fireProtesters of inmates who died in the Comayagua prison fire on February 14th of this year, marched in Tegucigalpa yesterday, demanding the return of their relative’s corpse. Two hundred distraught relatives repeatedly shouted, “Justice, Justice!”

Dennis Valadares was one of the march organizers who lost his 23 year old brother to the fire. His brother had already served his time, and was waiting to be released.

One hundred and ten bodies have been returned to their families, but there are still many more to be identified. Honduras has received medical technicians from other countries to help perform required autopsies and sort through remains, but it is a time consuming process, and the state of the remains has added to the delay.

U.S.A. Ambassador to Honduras, Lisa Kubiske, commented on the investigative report of the fire, saying “there was negligence and violation of the law on the part of authorities by allowing these prisons to remain overcrowded and in dangerous conditions.”
