Six Children Die in Northern Honduras Landslide

Six children died Wednesday night in a landslide that destroyed two houses in the village of Los Chicharrones in the El Balín area of Santa Cruz de Yojoa in the department of Cortés in northern Honduras.

According to the Fire Department, the victims are Cristina (7), Jazmín (10), Junior David (9), Katerine Judith (8), Jesús Zabala (5) and Génesis Pérez.

Two other girls, Gabriela Zavala (11) and Jenny Zavala (5) were rescued by members of the Fire Department and transferred to the Mario Catarino Rivas Hospital in San Pedro Sula.

The landslide was caused by heavy rain that fell on the area in the evening hours.

The Permanent Contingency Commission (Copeco) had declared on Wednesday a green alert for 48 hours for La Fragua, Baracoa, in the department of Cortés and Ramal del Tigre in Tela, Atlántida.
