Taxi Rates Increased Today

Taxi drivers have hiked the fare to take a ride in Tegucigalpa today. Although the government has not approved this increase, the taxi drivers say they are losing too much money waiting for an agreement on the issue.

The increase was actually announced last week, with drivers citing rising fuel prices and the cost of spare parts, which would force them to begin charging passengers 12 Lempiras.

The elevated fare is also meant to help taxis recover some of the “bonus” money that they have not yet received, which was promised to them by the administration of Mel Zelaya. The current administration had indicated the transporters would be paid their money, but to date it has not disbursed the full amount owed.

The Ministry of Public Works and Transportation and Housing (Soptravi) made no comment on the increase, and have not authorized it.
