TPS Extension Granted for Hondurans

Temporary protected status for people from Honduras who were in the U.S. before Dec. 30, 1998, was set to expire on July 5th of this year.

Now, however, Hondurans will be entitled to an additional 18 months’ stay in the United States. The expiration date has been extended to January 5, 2012. The temporary legal status has been extended several times since Hurricane Mitch caused wide-spread disaster in 1998.

The United States says Honduras has not recovered from Hurricane Mitch, preventing them from adequately handling the return of their citizens. The United States Department of Homeland Security estimates that 66,000 people from Honduras are eligible.
