Vacation Discounts to Roatan

Promotional offers of rates as low as 30% by hotels and airlines in Honduras are fueling a rise in the country’s tourism. Following a drop in visitors due to recent political events involving former president Manuel Zelaya, along with the economic downturn worldwide, tourists from North America are now returning to the beaches of Honduras’ northern coast and its Bay Islands.

On the resort island of Roatan, business leaders are launching an innovative program called “Vacation for Roatan” aimed at introducing vacationers to the community while supporting local humanitarian causes such as the Clinica Esperanza, Sol Foundation, and Roatan Marine Park.

“Because of the US economy and the trickle down effect to Roatan, donations to keep our medical clinic operational are dramatically lower this year,” said Ohio native and Clinica Esperanza founder “Nurse Peggy” Stranges. At the non-profit Roatan Marine Park, director Grazzia Matamoros cited a 33% decline in sales and donations that “threatens the development of activities required for the conservation of Roatan’s natural resources.”

As part of Vacation for Roatan, for any customer who calls, mentions the program and books a vacation rental home through the end of the year, Roatan Life will donate 10% of the pre-tax booking price to a local non-profit of their choice. Roatan Life has the largest selection of vacation rental houses, condos and villas on Roatan. It also has dedicated realtors who can assist in purchasing property on the island.

Its entire team of realtors has committed to donate 10% of their net commissions to a charity of their customers’ choice for 2009 with any mention of Vacation for Roatan.

“Roatan is a unique place for many reasons, but one incredible aspect of the island is the level of volunteerism,” noted Roatan Life co-owner Steve Hasz. “Nearly every foreigner who has relocated to Roatan financially supports one or more of the many worthy projects on the island. Many islanders and visitors volunteer their time as well.”

Guadalupe and Meg, if you were better informed people you could possibly really be of benefit to Honduras, unfortunally I can read in your lingo all the propaganda that the “Red Tirants of the World” have been spewing for almost one hundred years.
One of you should go and spend some time with the Cuban poor, and the other one should do a market study of Venezuela.
Promises made by Zelaya sounded well, and landed on wanting ears, but if you can’t offer a soultion that will keep the people employed, you are not helping.

Here’s some truth from the New York Times:

To Ms. Castro, who lives a solidly working-class existence, Mr. Zelaya was ousted because people… felt threatened by his efforts to lift up the poor — most notably with a 60 percent increase in the minimum wage to about $9.60 a day from about $6 a day. An estimated 60 percent of Hondurans live in poverty.

Last week, Mr. Zelaya’s supporters, led by an estimated 50,000 teachers, tried to put more pressure on the de facto government by keeping schools closed, staging days of demonstrations and blocking traffic along highways around the country’s two major cities.

“I don’t think I have ever seen a president like him,” Ms. Castro said of Mr. Zelaya. “Maybe he made mistakes, but he always erred on the side of the poor. That is why they will fight to the end for him.”

…public schools remain closed, troops have been deployed to protect most government offices, clashes between the police and protesters erupt most days, and reports of attacks against the press and government opposition leaders have begun to increase.

…graffiti portrays the leader of the de facto government, Roberto Micheletti, as “Pinocheletti,” a reference to Gen. Augusto Pinochet, the former Chilean dictator. Human rights groups accuse the coup-installed government of using “death squad” strategies against its opponents. …

Those who suport the guerilla coup regime are trying in vain to turn back the hand of time. The great wheels turn, and now it is time for the people to have the power. Shame on those who are acting like enemies of the people and democracy. Get out of our way!

hey Guadalupe, the ONLY ppl making honduras a dangerous place are ppl like you, setting fire to establishments and what not. Zelayas people are vandalizing businesses and setting buses on fire.

  7. Mauri  August 11, 2009 at 5:37 pm

Terrorist military???! The only terrorists are the violent supporters of Zelaya causing mayhem in the streets. Good thing the majority of Hondurans are peaceful and don’t want anything to do with comunism.

With the guerilla coup regime in power, smart tourists are staying away. They never know if they could be arrested or killed by the out of control terrorist military.
