Weather Alert in 10 Departments of Honduras

Ten of the eighteen departments of Honduras are on Green Alert as announced by the Permanent Committee on Contingencies (COPECO).

The preventive measure includes Choluteca, Valle, the northern part of Francisco Morazan, La Paz, Intibuca, Lempira, Ocotepeque, Copan, Santa Barbara and Cortes.

The National Weather Service (NWS) announced rainy conditions for 24 hours due to the departure of the tropical wave, on the west side of Honduras, “associated with a low pressure system, located south of Guatemala,” said Copeco in a statement issued today.

The phenomenon could generate intense electrical activity, moderate to heavy rains on the western, northwestern, southern, and central areas of the State, with amounts that may range between 40 and 60 millimeters of rain per day, with highs of up to possibly 80 millimeters.

Copeco and the Commission of the Valley of Sula, Cortes, in northern Honduras, warned of the increased flow levels of the Ulua River, which runs through the departments of Santa Barbara, Cortes, Yoro and Atlantida. They ask residents keep an eye out for possible floods and landslides.
