Yellow alert for the Honduran territory because of tropical depression

The government of Honduras has declared yellow alert for the Caribbean coast, north and east of the country which are the areas that will be affected by the tropical depression that has been formed near the Honduran territory and Nicaragua.

The chief of COPECO declared to the press that the National Hurricane Center (NHC) of the United States has confirmed the formation of this tropical depression affecting Honduras.

The phenomenon could become the tropical storm Paloma between Tuesday and Wednesday, according to the NHC.

It is anticipated that the tropical depression will continue on a parallel trajectory to the Caribbean coast until it arrives to the Gulf of Honduras between Guatemala and Belize.

This trajectory is similar to the one hurricane Fifi had back in 1974 that caused some of the worst disasters in Honduras. The NHC does not discard that the center of the new tropical depression will turn to the south of the Honduran territory.

COPECO explained the yellow alert means that the population living in areas of high risk of flooding and landslides could be evacuated if necessary.

The departments of Honduras under yellow alert for the next 72 hours are Gracias a Dios, Colon, Atlantida, Bay Islands, Cortes, the north of Yoro and Olancho.

Gracias a Dios is the first place in Honduras where this phenomenon started this past Monday, when it was still only a system of low pressure.

The rains will affect all the Honduran territory, the departments under alert will experience heavy rains as for the rest of the country, and the rains will not be as intense.
