Zelaya Touts His Reconciliation Plan

Ousted former president of Honduras, Manuel Zelaya, proposed a peace and reconciliation plan that would allow Honduras back into the international community, including the acknowledgment of current President Porfirio Lobo and his administration.

Zelaya’s proposal includes putting an end to all human rights violations and guaranteeing political freedom for all parties, but “without absolving the crimes committed by the military,” according to Zelaya during a press conference given in Buenos Aires on Wednesday after his meeting with OAS Secretary General Jose Miguel Insulza.

The ousted former president said earlier that he presented this proposal to the Latin American presidents that attended the Bicentenial events on Tuesday for the commemoration of the Mayo Revolution. He said with his plan, it’s possible that “Honduras return to the international community by keeping up with an agenda for human rights, of allowing a free, democratic system to persist as a right of every citizen of Honduras.”

“I am working towards the acknowledgment of the government,” Zelaya claimed.

Earlier, Zelaya called President Lobo, whom he asked to accept his proposal and “set aside all of the pressures from those behind the coup who are still holding political posts.”
