Businesses Propose Part-Time Work

Employers are supporting the initiative of the National Congress to create more jobs in Honduras, by submitting proposals to incorporate more flexible schedules for workers; however, labor unions are opposed to the idea.

Mario Bustillo, executive director of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Tegucigalpa (CCIT), reported that it submitted this proposal to facilitate the project promoted by the National Congress. The business sector believes that part-time employment will generate more jobs, and that the labor unions have not provided any comprehensive proposal in this regard.

The secretary of the Confederation of Workers (CUTH) said that they are holding talks with labor unions and the National Congress to effect a solution that does not jeopardize the rights that workers have already gained. They are fearful that part-time jobs could lead to a back slide of full-time workers benefits; and cost them jobs. A business could replace a full-time worker, who receives full benefits, with part-time workers, who may make less money, and who the employer might not have to provide benefits.
