Canadians Support Honduras

Canadian Foreign Minister, Peter Kent, met this morning with President Porfirio Lobo on an official visit to strengthen ties between the two countries.

“Canada does not impose conditions on their friends, Canada is ready to assist the democratically elected government by the people of Honduras,” said Kent.

Kent said his principal aim is to integrate the international community with Honduras, and that his country has continued to monitor the situation surrounding the political crisis. On Tuesday he met with the secretary of the Organization of American States (OAS) to discuss the return of Honduras.

He reiterated his support for the democratic government of Lobo Sosa, and offered to cooperate in every possible way so that the Truth Commission could be effective in achieving national reconciliation and international recognition of President Lobo.

Kent and Lobo Sosa gave a joint press conference in which several issues were addressed, including cooperation between both countries. Canadian Foreign Minister Peter Kent said that Honduras has taken significant steps towards national reconciliation with the establishment of the Truth Commission.
The diplomat said it is very important for the international community that the government of Honduras work on the integration of the commission, one of the requirements of the Tegucigalpa-San Jose agreement for national reconciliation.

“The desire of Canada is normalizing relations with Honduras.” Kent said during a press conference held at the Government House. “As you know, Honduras is a country of great interest,” especially for the welfare of Canada.

The representative of the Organization of American States Victor Rico, left Honduras earlier today, and said he was “satisfied” with the draft of the Truth Commission.
