The award recognizes the role U.S. businesses play abroad as corporate citizens. As one of three winners among more than 300 companies considered for the award, Fruit of the Loom is being recognized by the U.S. State Department for its exemplary corporate citizenship practices in Honduras, where the company is one of the country’s largest private employers, according to a news release from the company.

The ACE honors Fruit of the Loom’s work in Honduras to pioneer union advancements at its garment manufacturing facilities, including forging a ground-breaking collective bargaining agreement with its workers which has become a model for the Central America region; recognizing unions and adopting a union-neutral policy at each of its assembly facilities in Honduras; providing more than 10,000 health screenings for people in local communities; and engaging in environmental stewardship through reducing carbon emissions and providing ecological stoves to rural areas.

This is the first ACE award nomination and subsequent win for Fruit of the Loom. For more information on the company’s commitment to social responsibility and other initiatives, visit www.fotlinc.com.

Earlier this month, the National Safety Council named Fruit of the Loom President and CEO Rick Medlin as one of 10 CEOs Who “Get It,” its annual recognition of leaders who demonstrate world-class safety.

For 15 years, the Secretary of State has bestowed the ACE to U.S. businesses that undertake responsible activities to improve lives and advance the needs of local communities around the world. The Department of State remains committed to furthering best practices by collaborating with U.S. businesses. For more information, please visit: http://www.state.gov/e/eb/ace.
