Honduras Debt About 2,500,000 Lempiras

Finance Minister William Chong Wong stated today that Honduras’ external debt exceeds 2,500,000 lempiras.

According to Wong Chong, Honduras’ external debt amounted to 2,547 million lempiras, and not the 3,600 million as claimed by the Social Forum of External Debt and Development of Honduras (FOSDEH). Minister Chong believes, “it is possible that this figure arrived at by FOSDEH was determined by considering all the international loans which have been approved for Honduras”, but that the funds have not yet been disbursed. He added that when the resources are disbursed, the debt could reach 3,600 million lempiras at the end of this year, because the debt increases when funds are realized.

The official stated that claims that the State has acquired are manageable because they are loans of 30 or 40 years, and Honduras “is not going to pay until the end of 40 years,” he said.

According to Wong, the credits that the government has currently taken from international agencies are intended to strengthen the Executive Directorate of Revenue (DEI) for the Financial Management System (SIAFI), and for efficient generation of the public institutions.
