Honduras Implements 911 Emergency Number

As part of the Project for Safer Cities, Honduras has implemented a new telephone number for people to use to report an emergency situation.  This new number will replace all previous emergency numbers.

Honduras has chosen to use 911, in keeping with the already well-known emergency number used in North American countries such as Canada, the United States, and the Dominican Republic.  (In Europe 112 is the most widely used to report emergencies.)

According to the Director of National Security, Pompeyo Bonilla, who announced  the implementation of this number on television and radio stations in Honduras,  all emergency calls will be routed through the 911 exchange, and the appropriate response team will be sent.

This measure seeks to strengthen public safety and provide immediate action from response teams such as the National Police.
