Honduras Participates in 43rd General Assembly of the OAS

Honduras is participating in the 43rd Session of the General Assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS) [Organización de los Estados Americanos – OEA], being held in the colonial city of Antigua Guatemala.  The General Assembly began on Tuesday, June 3rd, 2013, and will end today.

Honduras Secretary of Foreign Relations, Mireya Aguero Corrales Chaired the Honduras Delegation to the 43rd OAS General Assembly

The Official Honduras Delegation to the OAS 43rd General Assembly was chaired by Honduran Ambassador Mireya Agüero Corrales,  who was joined by Ambassador Leónidas Rosa Bautista, Permanent Representative of Honduras to the OAS.

The general secretary of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, opened the assembly, entitled, “For a Comprehensive Policy against the World Drug Problem in the Americas”, with a ceremony held at a coffee farm, with the assistance of foreign ministers and delegates from 34 active member countries, and a delegation from the U.S. led by the Secretary of State, John Kerry.

The Guatemalan president, Otto Perez Molina, and Mr. Insulza gave words of welcome to all the attendees. After their speeches, the Guatemalan Institute of Tourism (Inguat) presented a show that was described as “a cultural and artistic spectacle in which images were projected in three dimensions with choreography” by the director of Inguat, Pedro Duchez.

During the conference, the Ministers of Foreign Affairs have discussed a comprehensive policy against the world drug problem and its direct bearing on crime and violence generated by drug trafficking and related crimes in the hemisphere. The aim is to adopt coordinated policy measures which will incorporate the areas of public health, education, prevention and social integration of the victims, and the strengthening of democratic institutions, by promoting local and national development, which allows strengthening the opportunities through social welfare and higher levels of security for the inhabitants of our continent.

As part of this event, the Honduran Foreign Minister and the delegation have held several bilateral meetings of special interest to Honduras regarding political, economic, trade and other cooperation from friendly countries such as Uruguay, Israel, Kazakhstan; the Association of Caribbean States (ACS); with the island of Granada; the member countries of the Pacific Alliance: Mexico, Peru, Chile and Colombia (of which Honduras has observer status); and with the member states of the Central American Integration System (SICA).

The bilateral agenda began with a meeting between the head of the Honduran delegation and Mr. Christian Leffler, Executive Director of the Americas Department of the European Union (EU), which addressed the issues of European cooperation to Honduras in various areas, with emphasis on security, social development, prevention, rehabilitation and integration.

In the same frame of reference, talks were held about the Honduran electoral process, and the presence of EU observers in November, an offer which was welcomed.

The 43rd General Assembly of the OAS will conclude today with the signing of the Declaration of Antigua.
