Western Honduras Coffee Certified

“Western Honduras Coffee” is now officially certified for exportation.

This is a proud achievement; the result of years of hard work and cooperation between the Honduran farmers and transporters, culminating in international recognition.

The Center for Research and Training for IHCAFE was the setting for some 2,000 people to come together to applaude the success achieved through arduous work every year.

In attendance were the mayors of the departments of Lempira, Ocotepeque, and Copán, Congressman Jorge Pinto, the president of IHCAFE, Asterio Reyes, the designated President, Samuel Reyes, the head of Congress, Juan Orlando Hernández, and invited guests.

The president of the National Association of Coffee Growers of Honduras, Jorge Lanza, received the certificate of the first Geographical Indication (GI) in Honduras, a requirement for the product to enter the international market.

The President of the Honduras National Congress, Juan O. Hernández,
said that employment generation is a priority for this government, “The idea is that Hondurans realize that they can get ahead in their land, and not have to leave their family for a dream, which in most cases, leads to mourning in Honduran homes. This requires the commitment of employers and labor organizations, however, to support the program for temporary or part-time employment, ensuring there is work for those who do not have it.”

He also reported that Congress approved 175 million Lempiras to be used to repair the stretches of road damaged by heavy rains that hit the country in recent days, preventing the transfer of products to their processing zones, which would jeopardize the production of coffee.

The money will be used to respond to emergencies in the damaged areas, said Asterio Reyes, President of IHCAFE, for building bridges and paving roads so the coffee can be moved from the plantations to safe storage areas.
