The San Pedro Sula representative of the humanitarian agency, Wilfredo Castellanos, told reporters that the cases have been registered against the State Hospital Mario Catarino Rivas, “We are investigating a complaint that over only a weekend, eight minors have died.” Castellanos insisted that there are “several” reports that “several children have died” in the Mario Catarino Rivas hospital, because of the “lack of medicines and ventilators or respirators.”
The demand for people who require the use of respirators “is great,” he said, noting that only five such machines are working. “It’s traumatic to see how mothers are waiting for someone to vacate one of the five machines for use by their child,” lamented Castellanos, who did not specify the ages of the deceased youngsters.
The hospital director, Juan Argueta, did give a report of the death of these children, but offered no details; health authorities so far have not made any statements about the case.
Honduras’s health system has been in crisis, due to the daily extreme lack of medicines and supplies, confirmed patients attending State hospitals.
