Armed Forces Commit to Prevent Forest Fires

As the summer season approaches, the Armed Forces of Honduras, with the support of other institutions, has officially launched a campaign to prevent and combat forest fires.

Nineteen forest fires have already occurred nationwide this year. Climatic changes have caused the presence of high temperatures that create ideal conditions for fires. It is essential the general public gets involved in the protection and conservation of our forests with prevention activities.

Honduan Military Fights Fires

Last year, members of the Armed Forces put out 795 forest fires. The military has made available three thousand trained troops to work in combating any possible fire, and have installed 136 military bases nationwide for reactive response. The military personnel assigned to this activity will remain indefinitely.

This season, 1.9 million hectares of forests will need protection according to the Directorate of Ecosystems Support and Environment Management.
