Children at Social Risk Are Safe After Fire in Home

Nearly 160 children were affected by a fire which devoured most of the Nueva Esperanza center in the neighborhood of El Carmen this past weekend.

Several organizations have been helping to support the displaced children who are temporarily stationed in the El Edén home in the Medina neighborhood. The children are there temporarily because El Edén is not in the proper condition to provide care for all of the children, whose ages vary between one month old to 12 years of age.

The regional director of Ihnfa, Alfredo Kattán Dacosta, will be required to provide information on actions to be taken, as a guarantor of the life and physical integrity of children, as the protection of children is an obligation that corresponds to the Ihnfa. The Prosecutor’s Office will decide if they must take action after the fire report is received.

The Regional Northwest Representative of Ihnfa, Nahum Aguilar, said the minors were removed from the fire responsibly, and firefighters carried out evaluations on the children immediately. The recommendation was to move the children elsewhere, as the building was completely decimated due to a short circuit inside a room in the building.

He indicated that they have been coordinating with private organizations, and are also requesting support from other institutions and society, with the aim of replacing items that were burned, such as bedding, clothes for the children, and other articles.

Additionally needed is a partnership for reconstruction of the center; so far they are lacking the amount of investment necessary to begin the project.
