Bishop of Honduras Clarifys Stance

The Catholic Bishop based in the Capital of Honduras, located in Tegucigalpa, has once again, reiterated the Catholic church did not at any point, approve of current President Mel Zelaya’s illegal attempt to have a popular vote during the Honduran primary elections tomorrow.

The Bishop stated he was “ashamed” that Zelaya misinterpreted the Catholic church’s stance. The Catholic church would never support an illegal act, and the Bishop believes this is what Mel is requesting.

The Bishop stated, “We will have to see. I can clearly see that what has happened in Venezuela is happening in Honduras, as it did in Bolivia and Ecuador”.

“I hear/see the hand of the President of Venezuela, Hugo Chavez, entering into this country. We cannot give in to
“chavismo”, nor anyone; as we would like to be free and independent.” The Bishop also stated, and has called for everyone to remain calm.

The Bishop recommends the President of Honduras find a way to reconcile all of the sectors of society through a dialogue, as his actions, without listening, has provoked the the division of the people.

The Catholic church has also expressed through its clerics, that at this moment, the problems most important in this country of Honduras, are not the fourth vote. The problems are unemployment, poverty, and an economic world wide crisis.

The Bishop also stated, “In conclusion, that anxiety and fear cannot be grounds for political aspirations to remain in control, and the current public division. The truth will prevail in all moments, and this is the only truth.”
