Honduras Blue Star Wins Copa Latina

Held in check for most of the match, Saul Martinez proved he was tournament’s prolific scorer at an opportune time.

Martinez scored in the 102nd minute to give Blue Star Honduras a 3-2 overtime victory and the Copa Latina championship against Seleccion Argentina on Sunday night at Ted Hendricks Stadium.

Geovany Lopera’s pass found Martinez just inside the large area, where Martinez dribbled a couple of feet and converted the championship-winning shot past Argentina goalkeeper Gustavo Alvarez. The goal was Martinez’s seventh of the tournament and helped Blue Star erase the bitter memory of losing in last year’s final.

“It was so significant to achieve this victory in a city that has provided me so much,” said Martinez, who began his career with Miami F.C. “I was able to seal this memorable win with a beautiful goal.”
