Bridge Collapses in Honduras

At least 14 communities are isolated in the Costa de los Amates, Department of Valle (southern Honduras) because of the collapse of the bridge “El Cauce”.

The Honduran Red Cross reported that the bridge located in the area and connecting these settlements with the rest of country, collapsed, due to heavy rains brought by Tropical Storm Alex. The relief corps have asked authorities for boats to service the people.

The areas cut off are Sonora, Conchal, Muruhuaca, Playa Grande, Playitas, Valle Nuevo and Aguas Calientes.

About 200 homes were flooded in Marcovia, Choluteca. According to local authorities, the most affected are the districts of El Sinaí, El Porvenir; in addition to Los Llanitos, Los Mangles and Piedra de Agua.

Alex was downgraded to a tropical depression yesterday, but dozens of families in Tegucigalpa were evacuated, at least 20 homes were damaged by floods and landslides, and streets and boulevards were flooded during the rains.
