Broadband – Pay TV Good Market in Honduras

The broadband and pay-TV market in Honduras will generate revenues in excess of US$ 275mn by 2015, according to a new report from Signals Telecom Consulting, which adds that the local market for packaged services is not yet mature.

The recent purchase of Honduran mobile operator Tigo by Millicom (owner of local cable operator AMNET) has opened up to possibility of offering quad-play services in the country, the report adds, describing Tigo/AMNET as the operator with the most variety in its bundled offers.

Claro TV, the principal market competitor, has “not yet achieved sophisticated offers”, according to the consultancy firm: “The operator only has double play offers (broadband and pay-TV), despite the possibility of including mobile services as part of its packages, which would enable it to stand out against its competitors, because in Honduras there are several operators who offer pay-TV at very competitive prices,” said Elías Vicente, Senior Analyst at Signals Telecom Consulting.

Meanwhile, incumbent telco Hondutel is in need of accelerating its technological innovations if it is to avoid falling behind the market, according to the report: “The state-owned operator is far from being competitive, mainly due to the lack of packaging of its services and low speeds for broadband access; at this point one must also bear in mind Digicel, which might enter to compete in this latter segment and in telephony through its WiMAX license,” added Mr. Vicente. “Hondutel should also consider including pay-TV access in its portfolio of services in order to match the offers of its competitors.”
