Constitution Defenders Protest

Roughly 5,000 Hondurans marched peacefully today in defense of the Honduran Constitution.  They marched in opposition of the initiative of President Manuel Zelaya to conduct a survey June 28th on the installation of a fourth ballot box in the general elections in November.

The march was carried out by the Armed Forces Reserves and the organization “Alianza por Honduras en Paz y Democracia” – Alliance of Honduras for Peace and Democracy.

In spite of the resolutions of the Honduran courts, the President of the country, Manuel Zelaya Rosales, refuses to obey the law by following   through with his political project.

The leadership of the Alliance considers President Zelaya’s actions (calling for a Constitutional National Assembly to consider his  demand for a fourth ballot box)  manipulative and serving personal interests.  His call for the meeting has already been rejected by various sectors of society, and people are worried he is attempting to break the laws of the Constitution.

The spokeswoman of the Alliance, Gloria Isabel Agüero de Corrales, indicated that several people have shown their interest to participate in the movement.  Many want to defend the Constitution and demand respect for Honduran law.

Another one of the organizers of the protest, Maria Teresa Alvarez, stated that the peaceful protests will continue over the next several days, with marches in various sectors of the city.  She indicated that the activity does not mean a disrespect for the President and his ministers, but an outpouring of support for defending the Constitution.

it is sad to see what this president is trying to do. He will send Honduras backwards instead of forward. ai am happy to see the people stand up for their rights and their country’s future.
