Forest Fires Deplete Water Resources

The Fire Department reported four large-scale forest fires in Tegucigalpa today.

Department spokesperson, Oscar Triminio, said the first fire was located in the area of El Hatillo at 10 am. At last count, the fire consumed about 10 hectares, and the flames have reached the outskirts of Canaan, La Cumbre, and the colony of Villa Delmi. Firefighter Triminio said they used over 80,000 gallons of water which was taken from the water for El Hatillo.

Another fire occurred on the road to Olancho, specifically at the seven mile marker. That fire has also burned approximately 10 hectares. This included broad-leaf forest consisting of pine and oak trees. Oscar Triminio stated that the water used to control that fire was taken from water for the Lolo.

The other two reported incidents are at the exit of Valle de Angeles in the La Laguna and El Durazno areas, the latter of which has already been controlled.

Today’s fires were of major proportions. Officials must be on constant alert, as it not only burns the forests, but also uses the little water left in the capital that could have better uses.
